Many people from Madrid also come for August when Andalucía seems to close for a month, as there are still plenty of 'M' plate cars on the roads during then. I agree that their attitude towards the 'low-life thick peasants' of the south (as they look upon Andalucíans), and the English filth (as we are to them), does get everyone's danders up.

But I would definitely not compare them to the erics, who are just arrogant patronising ****s.

I was interested in Benalmadena Brian's comment about "Jock Fortnight" so I looked up Wikipedia for a definition of "Jock":

"A jock, by most accepted standards of the stereotype is an individual - usually a tall, physically fit, male in his late teens or early twenties - who is well-known for his athletic abilities. Jocks are more widely recognized in certain team sports, such as basketball, football, American football, Australian Football and other physically demanding sports.

The modern term "jock" derives from "jockstrap", an athletic supporter typically worn by males in contact sports to prevent injury to their penis and scrotum. "Jockstrap" (a strap for the jock) itself derives from an older use of "jock" as a reference to a seaman (the name Jock formerly being a common male name in Scotland several decades ago and now only used by very elderly people as a endearing term for a Scotsman) and the association of a common name or its variations [cf "Dick", "Willy" etc] with the penis or with sexual/excretory acts (such as "to jockum cloy a woman" for "to enjoy a woman" and "jockum gauge" for a chamber pot.) [1].

The modern slang term "jock" as a reference to an athlete can be used pejoratively, neutrally, or even complementarity. The pejorative use refers to an individual whose awareness of his own athletic abilities (or possible lack thereof) gives him the appearance of conceit, real or not to the observer (and in this sense the words "musclehead" and "musclebrain" are sometimes used); and as a result, jocks are often regarded as bullies to their peers, especially those who are not athletically inclined or don't play sports in general.

Most famously, the targets of bullying by "jocks" are "nerds" - as popularized by movies such as Revenge of the Nerds - given the idea that the athletically inclined and the intellectually inclined are polar opposites and that the traits each stereotyped group exhibit cannot coexist peacefully."

I am unaware of "Jock Fortnight" at Blackpool, but then I would probably consider myself to be a bit of a Nerd, being "built for comfort and not for speed" (Howlin' Wolf, 1969) and would go to a "Nerd Fortnight" instead if one exists.

Perhaps the Peña should consider organising such annual events in Benalmadena, which from an outsiders' view is the the closest thing to Blackpool on the Costa del Sol. Could be two excellent fundraisers!

Life on the Costa is very nice.....when it's not full of bright red Northerners walking up the middle of the street, sweating their nuts off in their nylon Rugby League shirts, dragging umpteen howling kids and their fat wives behind them.

Mind you, lots of Southerners do this but they're wearing the latest nylon t-shirt from their local JJB... or Chelsea shirts.
