Hello, I'm new on here, and firstly commiserations to all of you for the Valencia defeat. I saw the game and it might have been a bit different, had Cesar not been so unbeatable on the day, had Obinna buried that chance late on, and if Stepanov and Munua hadn't cocked up between them for the goal. I honestly can't call myself a Malaga supporter in the true sense of the word, but I've been to watch them a fair few times, including the Tenerife match when you sealed promotion - I'll never forget the awesome support that day. I truly hope you pull away from the relegation trapdoor (it'd be a real shame if last season's deeds all went to waste). It's not like you're getting mauled every week, though - six defeats have just been by the odd goal, haven't they? Best of fortune from now on!

Anyway, I'm just wondering whether the following might be of interest to some of you. When I left England two and a half years ago to live in southern Spain, one of my hopes was for the Spanish football scene to engage me. I'd become cheesed off by the game in England. I'll always love my grand old club, and indeed I keep my season ticket going, but I just feel the futility of it all now because we've been shut out by moneyed elitism and simply don't count any longer. For most of my life we'd been able genuinely to chase ambition on a level playing field, but all of that became denied to us. We've been left a million miles behind and the door has been padlocked. Also - match days themselves used to be vibrant affairs, but now all too many folk just sit there too shy to shout up and bring attention to themselves, and puffed-up jobsworths in orange anoraks eye everyone as prey, itching to pounce, replete in their obsessions with 'safety'. I needed to find a different corner - which is the title of a book I've just written.

It tells of my travels throughout the length and breadth of Spain to explore its football. I was particularly hoping for the match day experience itself to warm the cockles of my heart again (La Rosaleda certainly has done, please believe me!), but I also delved into Spanish football itself, its culture and its history. Among the places I took myself to were Santiago (to see how Compostela's fans felt about their team's spectacular plummet), Bilbao (I think there's something fine about Athletic's steadfast policy in the face of today's football world), and Huelva - the cradle of the game here. Chapter One of the book, meanwhile, focuses on Malaga CF, while another looks at the local scene in Fuengirola, birthplace of the legendary Juanito. Plus - I wanted to gauge any 'futility factor'.

If any of you are interested, here are the details:-
Title:            A Different Corner
Sub-title:      Exploring Spanish Football
Publisher:      Matador (an imprint of Troubador Publishing Ltd)
ISBN:           9781848761452
Price:           £7.99

It can be ordered from any book shop (and Bookworld will very soon be stocking it here), or bought from any number of internet bookstores, including Amazon. Or, if you'd like, I'd be very happy to cart some copies along to The Tavern one night and have a chinwag too.

Best of luck again,
Cheers,
Richard Brentnall

My copy from Amazon has arrived today and I will be using another grey and damp Manchester evening to read it by the weekend. Looking forward to it.

Apart from the bit about Richard having a soft spot for Sevilla. We will have to snap him out of that for a start. He can't live in Málaga 'pueblo' and say things like that!!

Puta Sevilla!

Don't fret, Chocky mate - that soft spot of mine for Sevilla hardened!
Thoroughly enjoyed my revisit of your shrine with you & Christian for the Zaragoza game (even though you weren't best pleased by the performance).

Hoot!
Ricardo
